A restless young woman ships off to fight an interstellar war, only to struggle with the effects of being cut off from her home by both time and space.
"Jettison" by JJ Pollack
Rebka, a restless young farm girl, joins the military in order to get off earth and see the stars. However due to the effects of time dilation caused by their rapid space travel, she and her fellow soldiers slowly lose touch with their friends and family back home. Rebka has a daughter with another solider, but is forced to give up the child to rejoin the war and complete her tour of duty. By the time she is able to return to Earth, she finds out from a distant descendant that her daughter is long-dead. Realizing there is nothing for her on Earth, Rebka rejoins the war, alone and unmoored from any traces of her former life.
